Ruth Bader Ginsburg left behind a legacy. Among other things, she fought for equality of the sexes. She was a terrible cook as she readily admitted. She loved her husband. And she leaves behind children and grandchildren near and dear to her. She also left behind many supporters, some my peers, who have looked up to her and held her in the highest esteem….individuals who are worried for the state of this country as we move forward. People like RBG are not “one and onlys” thankfully, but she was a “one of a kind” trailblazer who fought with tenacity and strength and grace to make a difference for others.
Today in honor of RBG, I would like to share a few of her quotes that really resonate with me.
- “Fight for the things you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
- “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made.”
- “My mother told me to be a lady. And for her, that’s meant be your own person, be independent.”
- “Women will only have true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.”
- “The state controlling a woman would mean denying her full autonomy and full equality.”
- “I ask no favor for my sex. All I ask of our brethren is that they take their feet off our necks.”
- “When I am sometimes asked when will there be enough [women on the Supreme Court] and I say, “When there are nine,’ people are shocked. But there’d been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.”
- “If you want to be a true professional, you will do something outside yourself…something to make life a little better for people less fortunate than you.“
- “How to be like RBG: Work for what you believe in, but pick your battles, and don’t burn bridges. Don’t be afraid to take charge, think about what you want, then do the work, but then enjoy what makes you happy, bring along your crew, have a sense of humor.”
In the coming days, we will all have the opportunity to learn more about her, to reflect on the changes she made for this nation and the differences she made for us and, ultimately, how she impacted where we are today as individuals! I don’t know about you, but I am thankful for women like Ruth Bader Ginsburg! In the coming election, let’s do our part and VOTE!
