“We rise by lifting others.” Robert Ingersoll
I love this quote! And isn’t it true!
Just yesterday, I was having lunch with three amazing women…..all beautiful inside and out. As sometimes happens, we starting talking about our physical attributes that we don’t like. I know I am guilty of this as well, but, as I listened, it really bothered me. So I stopped everyone and asked for the following:
Let’s go around the table and state one thing we like about ourselves physically and one thing we like about ourselves period – like how we show up for others.
Then I decided to go one step further and asked each of us to state the same about each other. I think it was a tad uncomfortable for the person in the “hot seat”. But those of us giving the compliments, we loved it! And it was super easy to come up with beautiful things to say about each other. What I witnessed for the person receiving the compliments was really special. That person glowed!!!
We were four women coming together for a last minute brunch. Some of the friendships were time tested and others were brand new. It was really wonderful to see how we just showed up for each other in that moment! And I learned that I have beautiful eyes……how nice!
What I have described is one simple exercise that really lifted others up! Maybe you will try it sometime. I would love to hear how it goes!
p.s. I think this would be cool to try with young people too!!
