WW or Weight Watchers is a program that promotes healthy lifestyles and weight loss. I want to share with you here why I think it is the best way to maintain good nutritional health.
For starters, I want to be clear that I generally stay at a healthy weight and I move my body on a regular basis. So, I am typically in pretty good shape from a weight perspective. However, there are times when I put on some unnecessary pounds and my clothes get too tight or flat out do not fit. There are times when I turn to food for comfort. There are times I just crave pasta and champagne and have days on end of celebrations (any reason will do) with friends. It can get out of hand and, when it does, I need to get back on track. I have tried lots of things over the years as likely many of you have too. Before WW, the best way for me to lose those extra lbs was calorie counting. Calorie counting worked very well for me. I learned a trick from a colleague to stop adjusting for the calories I burned working out and to just address my intake. I have carried that tip over to this day! I loved the counting calorie approach because it wasn’t restricting my diet really at all but was helping with portion control. However, over time, I burned out on the calorie counting. It was a bit tedious to consistently need to keep up with the count, particularly when eating out on the road and entertaining customers.
In the summer of 2018, I started my journey with WW. I had been introduced by a close friend. I had not been working out regularly, did not feel good physically, and was letting the stress of my job take over and dictate the time I spent taking care of me – not a great combination.
Very quickly, I fell in love with WW and I will tell you the reasons why!
- It is super easy! The points system rocks! Instead of counting 1500-2000 calories, I count 23 points daily. This difference is significant. If I don’t use the app all day at each meal, I can still easily sum up my points count in a matter of minutes. Over time, it becomes second nature and using the app can seem unnecessary. There is something about logging the points that keep me more accountable so I would recommend staying the course.
- WW offers weekly wiggle room with extra weekly points for splurges like dinner out with friends at your fav Italian spot or a birthday dessert.
- Roll over points are accessible for when you do not use all of your points on a given day.
- The goal, however, is to use your daily points. This program is designed for you to eat and not starve yourself!
- WW offers so many zero point foods making staying under 23 daily points pretty darn easy.
- All fruits are zero point foods- exception avocado
- All vegetables are zero point foods – exception potatoes
- Chicken breasts, eggs, legumes, and nonfat Greek yogurt are all zero point foods
- All seafood items are zero point foods
- With so many zero point foods, I can drink my wine and still stay in line with my daily points.
- Overall, I am much healthier eating the WW way. My focus is on lean proteins and fruits and vegetables. I eat very little processed foods full of chemicals and empty calories.
- I am never hungry!
- My relationship with my work-outs is healthier. I do not feel like I have to work out super hard so I can eat and maintain my weight. I just need to move and do what I love. Every workout does not have to be a gazillion calorie burner in order to count.
- Even when I slip, I still have a pretty healthy relationship with food and my choices are pretty good. When I see people choose diets with tons of restrictions, I cringe. Yes they get results, but it is often not sustainable.
WW is truly a lifestyle shift. I feel better when I eat the kinds of foods that WW encourages through their point system. And they have a few options available to choose from in order to determine the system that is right for you.
I love it! If you are looking for a sustainable way to maintain a healthy weight while eating filling foods high in nutritional content, WW may be the right choice for you.
